FACTS ON BLINDNESS

This blindness prevention week, let’s spread awareness.

  • Blindness is defined as the state of being sightless in both eyes. i.e a blind individual cannot see anything at all.
  • However in layman terms, the word blindness, is commonly used as a relative term to imply visual impairment, or low vision that even with the help of eyeglassescontact lenses, medicine or surgery does not help the person see well.
  • Between 300 million and 400 million people worldwide are visually impaired due to various causes. Of which 50 million people by approximation are completely blind,
  • Blindness is commonly caused by diabetesmacular degeneration, traumatic injuries, infections of the cornea or retinaglaucoma, and non-usage of any glasses or corrective lens. Vitamin A deficiency, retinopathy of prematurity, vascular disease involving the retina or optic nerve including strokeocular inflammatory disease, retinitis pigmentosa, primary or secondary malignancies of the eye, congenital abnormalities, hereditary diseases of the eye, and chemical poisoning from toxic agents such as methanol.

  • The causes of temporary blindness and permanent blindness vary.
  • An Ophthalmologist diagnosis blindness by examining of all parts of the eye.
  • The main symptom of blindness or visual impairment is difficulty with seeing. People who lose their vision suddenly, rather than over a period of years, are more symptomatic regarding their visual loss.
  • The treatment of blindness depends on the cause of blindness.
  • The prognosis for blindness is dependent on its cause.
  • Between 80%-90% of the blindness in the world is preventable through a combination of education, access to good medical care, and provision of glasses.
